Only 52 percent of Americans who own HDTV sets also subscribe to an HD cable or satellite service, according to a recently released study by the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing. Experts say the problem starts at the store. When a customer buys an HD set, retail outlets and manufactures often don’t inform the customer that he must subscribe to HD service, or use an antenna, to receive HD signals. So many owners pay thousands for an HDTV, without actually watching HDTV. The CTAM study also said 34 percent of owners who are not HD subscribers were not aware they needed a programming service, and 61 percent of non-subscribers falsely believe that HD picture quality is the same as DVD. “It’s surprising the number of Americans who are investing in high-end HDTV sets who aren’t getting true high-definition channels,” said Char Beales, president and CEO of CTAM. “People are not only missing out on a stunning experience, but a world of HD-only shows.”

Men ages 18-34 make up 41 percent of people who view online video but make up just 14 percent of the online population, according to a recent study from Leichtman Research Group. Men ages 18-34 also account for two-thirds of adults who watch user-created video online. Bruce Leichtman, President of Leichtman Research Group, says “As with most forms of media and entertainment, online video is following the traditional ‘heavy hand’ model of a minority of users driving the majority of the usage.”

The secret to getting a roll-over highlight and activate highlight is to have an Overlay layer over the menu to show the areas of highlight.

In LiveType, DVD Studio Pro expects a an Overlay layer containing only black and white pixels to use to trigger the rollover or activate highlights.

For this menu to get a highlight on the text when rollover or triggered we need a black on white version of the text.

Import both into DVD Studio Pro and add them to a menu, with the menu background added using Set Background.

We can create the overlay by turning off background layers: all except the text.

Duplicate the text layer (or flatten all the text layers into a single layer).

Turn it into black and white by setting Levels so that the output maximum is zero.

Add the black and white version to the menu by choosing Set Overlay.

Drag out a rough outline around each area of text to isolate it as a button. Name the button in the Inspector to make navigation and connections easier.

Set the Colors for rollover highlight and activation in the Color tab in the Inspector. There are radio buttons for each state and three sets of colors available per menu.

If you have a mouse with scroll wheel, or track pad that supports “two finger scrolling’ there are lots of ways to use it in Final Cut Pro.

Final Cut Pro fully supports a scroll wheel or “two finger scrolling” on a trackpad.

• When hovering over any slider control in the Motion tab or Filters tab you can use the mouse wheel to adjust the value.

This can be a very fast way to adjust the level sliders on the color correction filters, but unfortunately it won’t affect the color controls in those filters.

• It also works the same way when held over a rotation gadget.

• Move the mouse over the Viewer/Canvas images or timecode ruler in the Timeline then use the mouse wheel or two-finger trackpad to jog frame by frame. Hold down the Option key to jog in bigger steps.

• Move the mouse over the main part of the timeline window, hold down Shift and move the mouse wheel to scroll the timeline horizontally.

Instead of attempting to recreate titles each time, save one title to use as a template.

Creating a template and working from it for situations where lots of variations on a title have to be made, sure is faster than highlighting various parts of the screen and choosing different fonts, sizes and positionings each time. Typing 20 characters, or so, is dream by comparison.

When you have the template design finished as a Motion Project. From the File menu selected ‘Save as new Template’. Choose the category and you’re done.

If you have a lot of Motion titles to create based on a Template, AutoMotion from Digital Heaven can automate the process.

LiveType is a little more complex, but essentially saving a standard project file into a Template location.

With the Project tab active in the Timeline, choose the Edit menu and select Save As.

Navigate to the Templates folder, which is located in the main Library > Application Support > LiveType folder.

Inside the Templates folder, create yourself a new folder for your templates by clicking on the New Folder button. Give the folder a descriptive name.

Save the template into the new folder.

Now when you go to the Template Browser you’ll see your new category to the left and the template in the right column. There won’t be a preview for the template until you create one.

In Final Cut Pro keep the basic design as a Clip in the Browser or Bin and make a copy of it each time you want a new title. You can also duplicate the Clip in the Timeline to create a new instance of the title.

The only real trick to remember is that centered titles will jump as the link length varies if Wrap is active in the Layout Tab.
